Getting around in Brussels
The public transportation network in the Brussels-Capital Region is well-developed: trains, trams, buses, and metro. Three transportation network companies operate in Brussels: STIB (Brussels-Capital Region), De Lijn (Flemish Region), and TEC (Walloon Region).
If you are under 24 years old: You can get an annual subscription for €12 by providing a certificate of school attendance to STIB. Go to a STIB sales point, make your Mobib card, and request the subscription with the certificate.
If you are over 24 years old: You may be eligible for the Bim status with your health insurance (if you meet the conditions, calculated based on your income). With the Bim status, the STIB subscription is €85 per year or €8.10 per month for unlimited access to the network. The Bim status also allows for better reimbursement of healthcare costs. Check with your health insurance to see if you qualify.
You can also opt for a bicycle, as Brussels is a city heavily frequented by cyclists.
At night, you can use the Noctis night bus network and the shared taxis Collecto. Collecto are low-cost shared taxis at night. You can order a Collecto by phone at 02/800 36 36 or through a mobile app. You will be picked up at one of the 200 STIB stops in Brussels-Capital between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. You can then travel to your desired destination within the Brussels region. The fare is €5 if you have a MOBIB card; otherwise, it’s €6.
