In March 2026, students and lecturers from Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Łodzi and Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles met in Łódź for a week-long artistic workshop dedicated to exploring the city as a complex field of social, historical, and ecological relations. Intensive fieldwork, shared discussions, and formal experimentation became the starting point for the projects presented in the exhibition “Territory.”

The participants approached the city as a multilayered space — a territory where historical memory, everyday practices of its inhabitants, material traces of labor, and contemporary social tensions overlap. Łódź appears here as a particularly significant site: a city marked by the history of the textile industry, economic transformations, and processes characteristic of the Anthropocene.

The resulting works are primarily photographic in nature; however, photography is treated as a point of departure for intermedia practices including installation, collage, performance, and work with archives, sound, and text. The artists employ diverse research strategies — from documenting urban micro-scenographies and everyday rituals of trade, to examining historical memory and archival documents, as well as experimenting with language, textile materiality, and personal narrative.

The exhibition presents both individual projects and works created through collaboration within international teams. What connects them is a shared method of working: attentive observation of the city, experimentation with the photographic medium, and an attempt to capture the tension between private history and the collective memory of place.

“Territory” is a record of a brief yet intense encounter between two artistic environments. The exhibition demonstrates how working together within an unfamiliar cultural context can become a tool for investigating the city — its material structures, social relations, and emotional landscapes.
