Academie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles is a place of teaching and research, as well as a major creative and production workshop where generations of artists, creators and designers have been forged.
Academie royale des Beaux-Arts is a higher arts school (ESA) subsidised by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Its educational project is in line with the project of the City of Brussels, its organising authority.
Founded in 1711, the Academie royale des Beaux-Arts, École supérieure des Arts, is today at the crossroads of a rich history and a current educational and artistic project. It has inherited a tradition that has seen the stratification of a wide range of artistic practices and the invention of new teaching methods. It is now part of the complex international panorama of higher education, with a dimension that is as much pedagogical, artistic and professional as it is artistic. It is a place of teaching and research, and a major creative and production workshop where generations of artists, creators and project developers are forged.
Every year, more than 500 students from Belgium and all over the world follow its courses. They are enrolled in the 1st cycle of a bachelor's degree or the 2nd cycle of a master's degree in one of our 17 courses: Art in the Public Space, Interior Architecture, Visual Communication, Textile Design, Urban Design, Drawing, Urban Space - ISAC, Engraving, Illustration, Lithography, Painting, Photography, Exhibition Practices - CARE, Editorial Practices - MULTI, Sculpture, Screen Printing, Tapestry / Textile Arts, or the Agrégation, the Doctorat en Arts et Sciences de l'Art or one of our 3 continuing education courses: Knitting Maille, Food Design or Interior Design Management.
The school aims to develop its students' artistic and professional practices in a unique way, giving them a reflective and critical stance on the arts. In recent years, new courses and programmes have been created: Masters in Exhibition Practice, Editorial Practice and Urban Design, as well as the Institute of Arts and Choreography, and professional courses known as Executive Masters in Knitwear, Food Design and Interior Design Management. These new courses reflect the school's desire to move forward with its teaching, in step with the practices of the times.
L’Académie est reconnue, tant en Belgique qu’à l’étranger, pour la qualité de ses cursus, de ses enseignant·e·s et pour l’accompagnement pédagogique des étudiant·e·s qu’elle forme. Depuis plusieurs années, l’ouverture des cursus sur la recherche et la pratique professionnelle rend les parcours à la fois exploratoires et ouverts, et prépare les étudiant·e·s à leur entrée dans la vie active.
Un programme de vie culturelle chaque fois renouvelé ponctue l’année académique : expositions, workshops, journées d’études, visites, prix, invitations de conférencier·ère·s : artistes, théoricien·ne·s, professionnel·le·s des mondes de l’art. L’Académie a également développé un réseau dense de partenaires, que ce soit au niveau international (plus de 50 partenaires Erasmus), ou au niveau belge et bruxellois avec lequel elle collabore activement.
L’ArBA-ESA défend un enseignement singulier et exigeant et s’engage à répondre aux enjeux de la création contemporaine, des recherches qu’elle nécessite, avec une attention particulière pour les pratiques collectives autant par la transmission des connaissances que par la constance des remises en question.
L’école est attachée à une tradition d’ouverture sociale. Elle se veut ouverte sur la société et le monde extérieur. L’ArBA – ESA est un lieu inclusif, démocratique et pluraliste.
Elle assume une pratique pédagogique où la position d’artiste n’est pas un acquis social ou culturel, mais nécessite formation, développement et maturation.
