Doctorate in Art and Art Sciences

The doctorate is accessible to individuals holding a master's degree with an advanced specialization from a Higher School of Arts or an equivalent degree (bac+5).

Admission requirements

Anyone holding a Master's degree with a specialization from a Higher School of Arts or an equivalent diploma (Master's level, Bac+5) may enroll in the doctoral program and pursue studies leading to a PhD at a university in the French Community of Belgium.

Registration

The doctoral candidate is invited to submit to the coordinator of doctoral studies in art and art sciences at ArBA-Esa (Dirk Dehouck):

  • a thesis proposal (5 to 10 pages) accompanied by a brief bibliography
  • a portfolio
  • a CV

The application file is reviewed by the doctoral admission committee at ArBA-Esa.

The thesis proposal is then approved by two individuals who are qualified to supervise the research:

  • the primary supervisor, chosen from the academic staff of the university, holding a doctoral title obtained after defending a thesis, and part of the Doctoral School
  • the co-supervisor, chosen from the faculty members of the Higher School of Arts.

The proposed supervisor and co-supervisor confirm their joint agreement on both the written work proposal and the practical work proposal, taking into account their potential for collaboration. They inform the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, so that the admission committee, on the recommendation of the supervisor and co-supervisor, can designate a doctoral support committee. The supervisor and co-supervisor also propose the training program the doctoral candidate must follow within the Doctoral School.

Calendar

Given the registration deadlines at the various institutions, candidates are invited to make contact between January and, at the latest, September 1st of the academic year of their first year of registration. Applications, including the project, CV, and portfolio, must be submitted by September 1st at the latest.
