ENGLISH : CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC DEPICTION OF ANIMAL FIGURE AS A CRITICAL TOOL TO RECONSIDER WAYS OF INDUSTRIAL MEANS OF PRODUCTION

In the last two centuries, the joint development of industry and scientific knowledges have radically overturn the perception and understanding of the living beings. Nowadays, the relationship between the human behaviour and the animal goes through unprecedented ways of transformation and manipulation.

Those major changes that have taken place since the industrial revolution have induced a considerable modification of the symbolic value of the animal which leads to consider in a new light its use in contemporary artistic depiction.

There is then an essential need to nowaday redefines the aesthetic, philosophical and sociological aspects of the utilisation of animal figure by contemporary artists
Indeed, even though the animal figure has always been present in the history of art it seems in regard to his recurrence to take on an ever more increases importance within the art of the last forty years. It is obvious that the current ways of relation with the animal induce a wide range of new creations, experimentations and innovative forms in the field of contemporary art.

For an example, through the prism of the animal figure some contemporary artists question the impact of mechanization, call into question the technicist imaginary, mock industrial rationality or even imagine the possible evolutions of bio-genetic manipulations.
The ambition of this research is to put into perspective the innovative conceptual approaches and the formal strategies involved in the artworks of the selected artists in order to clarify the stakes involved.

This work will aim to put in perspective the artistic operations of this artworks and the involved processes in order to consider them in a wider meaningful context.

Regarding the artistic corpus, in order to develop a sufficiently wide point of view on the different ways of using the animal figure as a critical tool of industrial production methods, the analysis of a plurality of approaches has been preferred to a monographic study. This method thus allows to take notice of their formal and conceptual multiplicities.

Within the framework of this research which is studying the representation of the animal figure in contemporary art, in the context of industrial production, it appeared relevant to link a poïetic and aesthetic approach of the artworks with historical facts and sociological studies related to development and consequences of this industrial system.

Therefore my theoretical corpus calls for philosophical, aesthetic and semiological tools on one hand, historical, sociological and political tools on the other.
